About Dr. Mogul

Harriette R. Mogul, MD MPH, is a cum laude graduate of Bryn Mawr College, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and the Columbia School of Public Health. An endocrinologist, epidemiologist, and early pioneer in women's health, Dr. Mogul founded the nation's first Institute for Medical Research in Women (at Columbia University) where she spearheaded large national studies on women and weight more than twenty years ago.

After completing a Fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Westchester Medical Center, Dr. Mogul conducted multidisciplinary collaborative studies that included evaluation of the menopausal transition in inner-city women; a randomized trial of estrogen patch vs. estrogen pills in women with pre-diabetes; a multi-institutional study of adults with Prader Willi Syndrome, a complex condition that usually includes obesity and pituitary gland abnormalities; and EMPOWIR (Enhance the Metabolic Profile of Women with Insulin Resistance) - a placebo controlled, double blind, randomized clinical trial of metformin and low dose rosiglitazone in women with Syndrome W. http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00618072?term=EMPOWIR&rank=1

Today, Dr. Mogul serves as associate professor and Director of Research in the Division of Endocrinology at New York Medical College. For the past ten years, the focus of her research and clinical practice has been the menopausal transition, obesity, and disorders of insulin resistance and growth hormone deficiency in adults. Dr. Mogul’s perspectives on estrogen use in menopause have been highlighted in Time magazine and The New York Times. Publication “firsts” include the description of a simple blood test for insulin abnormalities in non-diabetic women; the definition of a disorder of weight gain and insulin resistance in non-diabetic, menopausal women–Syndrome W; and the use of metformin, a widely used diabetes medication, to treat obesity in women with normal blood sugar levels. This publication has been cited in Reuters, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

Living in Chappaqua, New York, Dr. Mogul is the wife of Malcolm D. Mogul, the mother of Jennifer Mogul, MD, a child and adolescent psychiatrist; Fred Mogul of WNYC; and Douglas Mogul, MD MPH, Fellow in Pediatric Gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins, and grandmother of Sydney, Zack and Nicholas Mogul Campbell, and Amelia, Jonah and Helene Mogul.
